Founded in Paris in 1988 by Martin Margiela, a graduate of Antwerp and former assistant to Gaultier, the house made anonymity a manifesto: blank white labels stitched with four stitches, refused interviews, deconstructed garments, exposed linings, and split tabi borrowed from Japan. A member of Renzo Rosso's OTB group, it found a second creative life with John Galliano and his successors, centered around the Artisanal line, haute couture according to Margiela, and the Replica fragrance, which captures olfactory memories.
