Wallflower, a truly living plant picture

What if, instead of giving just another decorative object , you gave a small garden to hang on the wall? With its living plant frame , Wallflower transforms houseplants into a true graphic composition . Halfway between a painting, a miniature garden , and a design object , the concept imagines another way to bring greenery into the home when floor space is limited.
Its appeal lies primarily in its cultivation method. Unlike a simple frame filled with preserved plants, the Wallflower living wall features real plants, housed in a growing pocket and watered from an integrated reservoir. This concept remains highly relevant today, as plant-based decor, natural materials, and interiors inspired by nature play an increasingly important role in the world of design. What if, instead of offering just another decorative object, we offered a miniature garden to hang on the wall? With its living plant frame, Wallflower transforms houseplants into a true graphic composition. A hybrid of painting, miniature garden, and design object, the concept offers a new way to bring greenery into the home when floor space is limited.
Its main appeal lies in its cultivation method. Unlike a simple frame filled with preserved plants, the Wallflower plant picture accommodates real plants, installed in a growing pocket and supplied with water from an integrated reservoir.
This concept remains highly relevant today, as plant-based decor, natural materials , and interiors inspired by nature play an increasingly important role in theworld of design. The aesthetic success of the wall-mounted plant frame rests on a simple idea: moving plants from the floor to the walls.
Unlike a shelf covered in pots or a large landscaping installation, Wallflower condenses the concept of the indoor green wall into a much more accessible, domestic format. The frame can thus become a verdant accent in a living room, entryway, office, or bedroom.
The object deliberately blurs the lines between decoration and gardening. From a distance, it appears like a painting. Up close, its foliage evolves and grows, reminding us that it is indeed a living element. This evolving dimension is precisely what gives it its charm. A printed work remains unchanged; an indoor vertical garden changes subtly with the weeks and seasons. In a contemporary apartment, it also allows for the introduction of greenery without multiplying pots on the floor. The wall then becomes a true canvas for expression.
How does the Wallflower watering system work?

This is probably the most interesting part of the concept. Product sheets still available from French distributors describe a device in which plants take root in a pocket containing a natural substrate. A cotton wick then descends to a reservoir located behind the frame. Water gradually rises by capillary action, allowing the substrate and roots to receive the necessary moisture. The principle is therefore based on four elements:
- a growing pocket to accommodate the plants;
- a natural substrate suitable for their development;
- a watering wick connecting the pouch to the reservoir;
- a water tank integrated into the frame.
On the WallFlower model documented by Leroy Merlin, a side indicator also allows you to monitor the water level. The advantage is clear: there's no need to remove the entire unit to water each plant individually. The owner simply refills the reservoir when necessary. The technical specifications kept by Leroy Merlin suggest, as a guideline, refilling approximately once a week. However, this frequency should be adjusted according to the room temperature, exposure, season, and the plants in the unit.
A plant frame that's easy to integrate into an interior

A plant-based object truly works only when it interacts with its surrounding space. Wallflower has an advantage in this regard: its geometric design allows it to coexist just as easily with minimalist decor as with a warmer interior. In a very clean, minimalist setting, the foliage creates an organic contrast against mineral surfaces, glass, or metal. Combined with wood, linen, ceramic, or natural tones, the plant-based artwork, on the other hand, enhances a soft and enveloping atmosphere.
This search for balance between nature, objects and architecture is fully in line with the evolution of contemporary design.
Even the major fashion houses no longer consider decoration a secondary domain. From Milan Design Week 2026 to new collections ofhome furnishings, domestic space is becoming a true extension of aesthetic identity.
Living wallflower or preserved plant frame: what's the difference?
The two products are sometimes grouped under the name plant frame, although their function is very different.
| Frame type | Living Wallflower Frame | Stabilized plant frame |
|---|---|---|
| Plants | Living plants | Stabilized natural plants |
| Watering | Yes, via a reserve | None |
| Light | Ambient lighting recommended | Generally unnecessary |
| Evolution | Plants grow and evolve | Visually stable composition |
| Interview | Weak but real | Very limited |
| Sensation | Small indoor garden | Decorative plant object |
Wallflower is therefore aimed more at people who want to preserve the living aspect of the plant while simplifying its care. Preserved plants, on the other hand, prioritize permanence and theabsence of watering. Botanic now sells several pieces in this category and, within its section dedicated to plant frames, living compositions and preserved models. Ultimately, the choice depends on the relationship one wishes to have with the object: contemplating a static composition or observing a small ecosystem evolve.
Where to install your living wall?
The first rule is to respect the plants' needs. Older recommendations for wallflowers favor ambient light while avoiding direct sunlight. A wall receiving diffused light is therefore generally more suitable than a location constantly in the shade or exposed for several hours behind a window in full sun. A picture frame can also be used:
- above a console in an entryway;
- near a workspace;
- on a wall in the living room;
- in a sufficiently bright room;
- in composition with several objects, illustrations or photographs.
Before wall mounting, you must, of course, consider the weight of the filled frame and use fixings appropriate for the type of wall. Depending on the model, the Wallflower system also allows for display on a piece of furniture . This is an interesting alternative for renters or for those who like to change their decor regularly.
How do I care for a Wallflower frame?
"Self-sustaining" doesn't mean completely maintenance-free. A living plant arrangement always requires a minimum of attention. It's essential to monitor the water level, the condition of the foliage, and the amount of light it receives. A few simple steps will help maintain the composition:
- regularly check the level of the reserve;
- top up the water before it is completely empty;
- avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight;
- remove any yellowed or damaged leaves;
- monitor the development of each variety;
- replace a plant if it no longer adapts to its environment.
One of the system's advantages lies precisely in the possibility of renewing the plant pocket or certain plants without necessarily changing the overall design. Truffaut still offers a ready-to-plant pocket for Wallflower in 2026 , designed as a replacement element to revitalize the arrangement.
A Christmas gift idea that's more personal than a classic decorative item
As theholidays approach, finding a gift idea suitable for someone who already owns a lot of things quickly becomes complicated. The Wallflower plant frame has several advantages: it's decorative without being impersonal, original without being extravagant, and vibrant without requiring the skills needed to maintain a large botanical collection. It's exactly the kind of gift that's sure to please.
- an indoor plant enthusiast ;
- a person who has just moved in;
- a decoration enthusiast ;
- someone living in an apartment with little space;
- a lover of design andunexpected objects.
The evolving nature of the gift also provides a lovely metaphor: unlike a fixed accessory, the arrangement continues to change after the holidays. This is undoubtedly what makes the idea remain relevant years after its introduction.
Will it still be possible to buy a Wallflower plant frame in 2026?
The answer today needs to be nuanced. The previous Luxe Daily article indicated availability at Botanic, Truffaut, and some florists, with a starting price of €25. This information should now be considered historical and not a snapshot of the current market.
As of August 30, 2026, Truffaut still offered a Wallflowers refill in the form of a ready-to-plant pouch. The retailer described it as using a natural substrate and wick watering system. Leroy Merlin, for its part, still maintained a detailed product page for the WallFlower S Metal Edition plant wall, but indicated that this specific model was no longer available.
Botanic, for its part, continues to use the term " wallflowers " in its section dedicated to plant frames, even though the models currently featured belong to other collections. In other words, it's best to check the availability of the complete frame with the retailer before purchasing, especially if a Wallflower is intended as a Christmas gift.
The plant frame: a decoration that transcends the trend
Wallflower was ahead of its time in a trend that is now much more visible: the rise of interiors where plants are an integral part of the décor. The product is interesting because it doesn't simply place a plant in a different container. It transforms the way we use walls, combining indoor gardening, design, and wall decoration in a single object. Its growing pocket and water reservoir system also simplifies watering, without sacrificing the pleasure of watching a living plant thrive.
In an era where interiors increasingly seek out tactile materials, nature, and objects capable of telling a story, the living plant picture retains a truly unique quality. And for the holidays, it possesses a quality that has become rare: that of being a gift that isn't immediately tucked away in a drawer.
